In the show, contestants are isolated in the wilderness and compete for the title. The show uses a system of progressive elimination, allowing the contestants to vote off other tribe members until only one final contestant remains and wins the title of "Sole Survivor".
At the beginning of the game, there are two tribes. After a couple of eliminations, the tribes merge into one. At this time, usually the jury starts to form [sometimes, the jury starts a couple of episodes before or after the merge]. When there are only 2-3 people remaining, the jury gets to vote for a winner and the winner is decided.
The format for Survivor was created in 1992 by British television producer Charlie Parsons.
The show is credited for making reality television a popular television genre.
